History Of Newark Airport
Have you heard of Newark Liberty International Airport? It was built on reclaimed land from the Passaic River in 1928 and it used to be one of the world's busiest airports until 1939 when a lot of airlines moved over to LaGuardia. During World War II, the US Army took it over for logistics, but after 1946 it started being used for civilian flights again. In the 70s and 80s, Newark Liberty International began to gain back its popularity by introducing non-stop flights to London and routes from People Express and Virgin Atlantic. By 2000, passenger numbers had gone up significantly from 10 million to 30 million. To keep up with this demand, there were a few improvements made such as a people-mover, airport parking lots and a new international arrivals facility. Eventually, People Express merged with United airlines and they began to expand their operations at the airport which meant that flight caps had to be introduced in order to reduce congestion. Thankfully, these were lifted again in 2009 and more development plans were outlined so that it could accommodate up to 40 million passengers each year.
