History Of Heathrow Airport

Originally built back in 1929 as the Great West Aerodrome, just south east of the hamlet of Heathrow (the same place where our present-day airport is located), it was intended to be a home for long-distance military aircraft heading off to the Far East. However, World War II ended before it could become fully operational. Rather than giving up on the project, the government decided to convert it into a civilian airport in 1944. The site was quickly expanded with old farms, markets and orchards included, before opening to the public in 1946. And the airport continues to grow even today - there are still numerous projects and bids for new runways, extensions and high-speed transport links all being considered.

Useful Tips

Ultimate Heathrow Airport Parking: The Best Options for Your Budget

Arrive at least 2.5 hours before your flight

Heading to Heathrow Airport? You'll be joining the over 207,000 daily visitors! Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there - it's a 4.7 square mile (12.3 sq km) site with four terminals and it can get really busy. Check out their live arrivals/departures feed before you go so you know what to expect. That way, you'll be prepared and ready for the hustle and bustle!

Free Pick-up Parking

If you're picking someone up from London Heathrow Airport, you can drop them off at the terminal forecourt, but unfortunately waiting there is not allowed for security reasons. To avoid this issue, try to coordinate your arrival with your passenger-to-be's flight so that you don't have to stay in the short-stay car parks for too long. Another great option is the LHR's long-stay car park, where you can wait for up to two hours for free! That way, your passengers have plenty of time to get off the plane and take the 10-minute shuttle from their terminal to long-stay parking - and if you're running ahead of schedule, you won't have to pay for arriving early.

Mind Your Head

At Heathrow, you might find some car parks a bit tighter than others. For example, the short-stay car parks at Terminals 2, 3 and 5 have maximum height restrictions of 7ft 2in (2.2m), while Terminal 4’s is even lower at 6ft 6in (2m). If you're parking an over-height vehicle, no need to worry - each terminal has a special area where you'll only pay the standard short-stay rate. Just look out for the signs!

Happenings At Heathrow

Heading to Heathrow Airport? Check out all the special events, offers and deals! Whether you're looking for a free children's meal with any main course at participating terminal restaurants, discounts on designer collections exclusive to the airport, or live music with your coffee- there is something for everyone. So make sure to have a look at LHR’s Special Offers website to maximize your experience!
