History Of Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport first took off in 1939 under the name ‘Elmdon Airport’. The Duchess of Kent, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark officially opened it that same year. During World War II, Elmdon was used as a base by the RAF before returning to public use in 1946 when the war ended. It stayed under state control until 1960. Fast forward to 1991, and the EuroHub terminal was built - the first one in the world to serve both domestic and international flights. These two terminals merged in 2011 and since then BHX has seen a huge amount of growth, welcoming up to 11.6 million passengers in 2016! And it continues to grow even today.
