History Of Dallas Fort Worth Airport

Do you know the story behind Dallas Fort Worth Airport? It all started back in 1940 when the idea of a regional airport between Dallas and Fort Worth was proposed. But it didn't actually become a reality until 1973! In 1942, the Civil Aeronautics Administration began building an airport at Arlington with plans to serve not only Dallas and Fort Worth, but their surrounding North Texas and Tarrant County region too. Unfortunately, the construction was halted due to a dispute about which way the terminal should face - this started a feud between the two cities that went on for over three decades! Fort Worth built their own airport at Arlington, while Dallas built theirs at Love Field. The two airports competed for passengers and airlines throughout the 1940s and 1950s, with Fort Worth's mayor Amon G. Carter boycotting all Dallas restaurants whenever he was there on business. Love Field prospered in the late 50s and early 60s, claiming 49% of air traffic by 1965. However, because the government didn't want to support two rival airports, pressure began to mount for the two cities to agree on a location for a regional airport. This finally happened in 1968 when an area between Grapevine, Irving and Euless was chosen as the site of North Texas Regional Airport. Construction was finished by 1973 and the first commercial flight - an American Airlines service from New York - landed at the airport on January 13th 1974. It quickly gained popularity, with international flights to South America, Mexico and Europe commencing in the mid-70s. In 1985 it was renamed Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and it became the fourth largest airport in the world by 1988. Today, American Airlines still calls DFW its home while Delta Airlines was a hub there from 1985-2005. It's come a long way since 1940! Is there anything else you'd like to know about DFW Airport?
