Location Of Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport is located in the City of Leeds Metropolitan District in West Yorkshire, about six miles (9.6 kilometres) northwest of Leeds city centre and 8.2 miles (13.2 kilometres) northeast of Bradford city centre. It's near towns like Otley, Guiseley, Keighley and Ilkley - so it's not too far away! It only takes around 25 minutes to drive there from Leeds city centre, and a mere 80 minutes from Manchester or Hull. If you're coming from central London, it'll take about four hours by car.

History Of Leeds Bradford Airport

People who lived in the area around Leeds Bradford Airport for many years still refer to it as Yeadon Airport, harking back to when LBA was known as Yeadon Aerodrome. It first opened all the way back in 1931 and was mainly used for pilot training and club flights. Later on, scheduled flights began to Newcastle, Blackpool, the Isle of Man and Edinburgh. Then, with the outbreak of war in 1939, the terminal building was put on hold as it was used to make military aircraft such as Lancaster Bombers and Bristol Blenheims - they even camouflaged the factory to look like a field from above with fake cows! After the war, the airport was renamed to Leeds and Bradford Airport and commercial flights restarted in 1947. In 1965, a new runway was added which allowed larger jet aircrafts to use the airport. Unfortunately however, the same year disaster struck when the terminal caught on fire and had to be rebuilt. A new one was opened two years later in 1968 and by 1976, the airport became a base for tour holidays with flights to Spain and Portugal. In the 80s, LBA grew rapidly and added a new radar and instrument landing system which made it even bigger - an Air France Concorde charter flight even landed here in 1986! Low-cost airlines began arriving in the late 90s and early 2000s, transforming the airport into a very busy terminal. And that's how it is today!
